In this 4-day workshop, Mike and Matt will trade turns doing demos drawn from their personal aesthetic and from objects they have become known for in glass. Students will benefit from over 40 years of combined experience in playing the game of being a glass artist and navigating through the turbulence of a career in art. Get leveled up with your knowledge, techniques and realizations of being a full time artist.

They will propose short exercises based on some of these objects and will survey the students to find more demos and exercises that suit their particular interests. This is a hands-on class where students will be torching as much as possible.

In general the instructors will cover a wide range of topics, Matt will focus on aspects of form, symmetry, scale, and working hollow and Mike will focus on coloration, sculpting, narrative, and working solid at various thicknesses. Starting with these points but not limited to them, there is no subject that will be taboo. The goal is to change the game for every student enrolled no matter where they are at in their stage of learning.

There will be informal slide presentations from Matt and Mike and a dialogue and critique on theirs and the students work.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Tuesday through Friday, with additional studio time Tuesday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm.

Matt Eskuche began flameworking in 1998 after metalsmithing for several years. His early glass influences were Emilio Santini and Cesare Toffolo, and more recently has been paying attention to what is going in the pipe-art movement. He has taught classes at national and international schools including Corning, Penland, and the Pittsburgh Glass Center, and exhibits his work with galleries and museums throughout the country. His work is included in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Racine Art Museum, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. The Lampwork Museum in Kobe Japan, the National Gallery for Foreign Art in Sofia Bulgaria, and in the Eskisiher Contemporary Glass Arts Museum in Turkey.

Mike Shelbo has made objects out of glass since the late 1900's. It has allowed him to explore his imagination and ultimately himself though a world of goblins and sculpture. He has worked with Glass Alchemy to illustrate their borosilicate colors in a chart that has become a staple on the walls of lampworking studios around the world. With a love for color and mixed media, Shelbo has completed several solo gallery exhibitions as well as participated in many group shows. From the furnace to the torch, there is so much glass knowledge to consume, and a hardworking wizard is always hungry. One must constantly be snacking forward.
